Bengaluru, Mar 21: The state government on Monday decided to simplify the procedure for issuing below poverty line ration cards, with an eye on the Assembly elections next year.
Sources in the government said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed the Food and Civil Supplies Department to introduce a self-declaration system for issuing new cards.
An applicant has to submit an affidavit, declaring that she/he is eligible to get a BPL card and that they qualify according to the criteria fixed for it. The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Siddaramaiah. Besides, income ceiling of Rs 1 lakh will be fixed. Hitherto there was no income limit.
