Madikeri, Aug 20: Amidst fresh rains, the rescue teams yesterday managed to evacuate around 90 people stranded in two flood-battered villages of Kodagu district. They had been stranded in Mukkodlu and Makkanduru villages since last Thursday when landslides disconnected their area from rest of the world.

With showers subsiding now and then, and some sunshine offering a glimmer of hope on Saturday, all were hoping that it’s finally time to just fix the damage that was already done. However, it rained throughout Saturday night and continued on Sunday. According to the weather forecast, more rains are expected till Wednesday.
Landslides, flooding of farmlands and collapse of buildings were reported from various parts. The army and navy personnel, supported by volunteers, swung into action. The worst-hit was North Kodagu — Madikeri and Somwarpet taluks.
Meanwhile, the work on clearing the landslide on Madikeri-Mangaluru NH 275 continued on Sunday even as rain continued to lash Madikeri. Landslides continued at Mekeri on Madikeri-Virajpet road and the stretch remained closed for vehicular movement. The strech was the only road connecting Mekeri to Bhagamandala.
Union Minister for Programme Implementation and Statistics D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, visited the relief camps set up for the flood victims of Kodagu in Sampaje Kodagu, Kallungundi, and Tekkila on Sunday.
They enquired about the health of the people there. Both visited rain-hit areas in Kadammakallu, near Kalmakaru in Sullia taluk. They also saw a damaged bridge there. Later, they visited Indabettu village in Belthangady taluk, where a landslip had damaged the Padambila-Kallaje Road. They asked officials to take up remedial measures soon.
