Bantwal, Feb 20: The Congress has swept the Pudu gram panchayat by-polls in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada by winning 27 of the 34 seats where polling was held last weekend.
As many as 81 candidates had contested in 34 seats of 10 wards of the Pudu gram panchayat. The counting was held at Mini Vidhana Soudha in BC Road on Tuesday.
While Congress backed candidates won in 27 seats BJP bagged six seats. Social Democratic Party of India managed to win only one seat.
Buoyed by the result, Congress activists began celebrations in front of Mini Vidhana Soudha by bursting crackers and distributing sweets.
The results have boosted the morale of Congress leaders ahead of Karnataka Assembly polls which is expected to be a neck and neck fight between Congress and BJP.
