Bengaluru, Aug 20: With exams only a month away, students in many private schools teaching state syllabus are still using photocopies of textbooks as they have not received the books for this academic year.

“For many classes, even now, we have not received Part I textbooks. When we ask the department, they say the distribution is completed. But our students don’t have any study material to read at home,” said Shashi Kumar D, general secretary of the Associated Managements of Private Unaided English-medium Schools in Karnataka (KAMS).

Hindi and Kannada language textbooks for primary classes, Class IX Part II Social Science and Mathematics textbooks are some of those which member schools have not received.

M A Khan, secretary of the Bangalore South District High School Headmasters Association, said schools have received most of the Part I textbooks for core subjects, but many schools have not got Part II.

“This is okay for lower classes where a semester system is followed. But class VIII, IX and X have an annual exam, so we have to teach lessons from both Part I and II from the beginning of the year,” he said. For example, in the social science textbook, there are lessons in history, geography and economics, which are distributed between the two books.

Commissioner for Public Instruction (CPI) Sowjanya said there is sufficient stock of books in the godowns under each Block Education Officer (BEO). “I have confirmation from the Textbook Society that there is sufficient stock in the godowns. Schools have to go to the office of the BEO to collect it. If they have not given proper indent, the department cannot be blamed,” she said.

However, school managements say that they returned from several visits to the godowns empty-handed. “If we ask for 50 books, we get only 25 or 30 from the godown. BEOs have the details of those books which have not been collected by schools, but they do not inform us when there is stock,” said Khan.

Hassan: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda has announced that his son, former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will contest from state's Mandya parliamentary seat as NDA candidate.

Deve Gowda told reporters on Tuesday that the decision to field Kumaraswamy, who is also JD(S) state president, in Lok Sabha polls from the Mandya seat was taken amid mounting public demand. "People are demanding that Kumaraswamy should contest from Mandya. In the core committee meeting as well, all members suggested that he should contest from Mandya," Deve Gowda said.

The former Chief Minister's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy had lost to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh from Mandya in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The JD(S) supremo further said that the name of senior leader Mallesh Babu has been finalised from the Kolar seat.

Deve Gowda's grandson and former Karnataka Minister H. D. Revanna's son sitting JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna will be contesting as the NDA candidate from the Hassan seat.

Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy in a media briefing indicated that he would contest from Mandya amid mounting public pressure on him.

Congress has fielded Venkatarame Gowda popularly known as ‘Star Chandru’ from the Mandya seat dominated by Vokkaligas. Star Chandru is a close associate of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

An Indian expatriate, hailing from Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, who was detained in Jeddah jail in an alleged cyber case, was set free recently. He is allowed to continue his work in the same company.

The 49-year-old Mangalurean, has been working for a Maintenance company in Jeddah for more than 13 years. He is known for his efficiency and sincerity in the company with good experience in his field of work.

His company usually assigned him on duty in Jeddah sea port to take the delivery of the goods consigned to his company. As a part of his duty, he normally takes pictures of the goods before the transportation. He did the same in February 2023 too.

The security personnel informed the police about his act that amounts to be a violation of the port security rule. He was unaware of the rule as he was doing it normally in the port during the release of the goods. Since then, he was detained by the police on the charge of photographing inside the port premises. After more than 6 months detention, he was released and allowed to work in the same company.

The detainee’s brother based in Jeddah was constantly pursuing the case.

P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono NRI lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, extended his socio-humanitarian help in this case upon the request of his family and relatives.

He actively involved trying to set him free from the jail on humanitarian grounds with the coordination and help of the Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah. The CGI keenly followed up the case with the concerned Saudi authorities. He was released from the jail recently and shared his happiness with his family and thanked good samaritans.
