Mangaluru/Bengaluru, Oct 17: At least 11 people have died of Influenza A (H1N1) in different parts of Karnataka since January this year, including three from coastal district of Dakshina Kannada.
On Tuesday, the health and family welfare department updated its Influenza A (H1N1) data, and stated that 542 cases have been reported across Karnataka this year. In Dakshina Kannada district alone total 29 cases tested positive for H1N1 this year.
According to the office of the District Health and Family Welfare Officer, two members of a family from Sajipanadu in Bantwal, and a woman from Ullal in Manglauru taluk died of suspected swine flu-H1N1 in this month.
Avvamma (50) of Sajipanadu died in her house on October 10 after taking treatment for swine flu in a private hospital. Her daughter, Jabeena (22), who was undergoing treatment for H1N1 in the private hospital, died on October 15. In the other case, a 38-year-old woman from Ullal died in a private hospital on October 9.
A 58-year-old man from Ullal in southwest Bengaluru, who was admitted to the staterun Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases on October 11, died on Monday.
“His case was serious. We tried our best. Though we had started treating him for H1N1, his reports came positive only around 9.30pm on October 15, after his death in the morning,” said Dr C Nagaraj, director of the hospital.
With an increase in H1N1 cases in the state, Jawaid Akhtar, principal secretary, health and family welfare department, has issued to a circular, stating that awareness campaigns have to be conducted across the state.
District health officers across Karnataka have been asked to organise such meetings and sensitise public on the preventive measures and hygiene aspects associated with the virus infection.
