Mangaluru, Apr 24: The Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to field its Mulky unit president Jeevan Shetty from Mulky-Moodbidri constituency as the party veteran and former minister K Amarnath Shetty has decided not to contest this time.
The JD(S) which released its second list of candidates for May 12 Karnataka assembly polls had announced the name of Amarnath Shetty from Mulky-Moodbidri constituency.
A former minister, Mr Shetty has contest elections 10 straight times from 1972 to 2013. He has won three times. But he decided against contesting this time keeping in mind his age, party sources said.
In eight Assembly elections from 1972 to 2004, Mr. Shetty won thrice and was runner-up five times. In 2008 and 2013, the BJP candidates emerged runner-up, pushing Mr. Shetty to third position.
He first contested in an election on Indian National Congress (Organisation) ticket in 1972. Mr. Shetty contested from the then Janata Party in 1978 against the Congress and lost. He was elected to the Assembly in 1983 and 1985 as the Janata Party candidate, both times defeating the Congress candidate.
He contested as Janata Dal candidate in 1989 election and lost against the Congress nominee. Mr. Shetty was elected to the Assembly again in 1994.
The former Minister lost in the four other elections that followed, as a Janata Dal (United) candidate in 1999 and as a JD(S) candidate in 2004, 2008 and 2013.
