Kasaragod, May 24: Even as the Kozhikode district of Kerala is haunted by the deadly Nipah virus that claimed several lives, Kasaragod district, wherein rains lashing regularly for past few days, is in the grip of dengue fever and other waterborne diseases over the last few days.
The coastal district bordering Karnataka so far has reported 83 confirmed cases of dengue fever, while another 529 suspected cases were reported from the hilly pockets, Deputy District Medical Officer E. Mohanan said on Wednesday.
Official sources here confirmed the death of three persons of dengue fever. The fatal cases were reported from Balal, West Eleri and coastal Ajanur panchayats.
In the light of rising cases of dengue being reported from the district, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja had convened a meeting in Kanhangad on May 14 instructing the authorities concerned to take efforts to check the epidemic outbreak.
Many cases of dengue fever were being reported from Balal, Kodom-Bellur, West Eleri, Kinanur-Karinthalam, and Kayyur-Cheemeni panchayats.
Hospitals were finding it difficult to manage the rising number of patients in the absence of adequate staff.
Besides, Chengala, Pallikkara, Madikai, Kallar and Delampady panchayats had also reported steady rise in dengue cases, Dr. Mohanan said.
