Mangaluru, Aug 18: Exhorting the Muslims to refrain from extravagance and lavishness during upcoming Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid), a senior Islamic scholar of coastal Karnataka has urged them to generally contribute to the needy and stranded people in Kerala and Kodagu that are devastated by heavy rains.
Muslims in coastal Karnataka will observe Eid-ul-Adha on August 22. Even though Islam strictly prohibits spending money for unnecessary things and encourages charity, especially during special occasions such as festivals, many people in the region throw lavish parties and buy luxury cars during Eid.
Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, Khazi of Dakshina Kannada, in his message to Muslims in general and rich Muslims in particular, said that it was time to earn reward from the almighty God by extending their helping hands to flood victims.
“We are witnessing death and destruction in our neighbouring state and district. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes in Kerala due to torrential rains that triggered massive floods and landslides. In Kogadu too a large number of people are displaced due to unprecedented rains and landslides. It is our responsibility to help them in every possible way,” the Khazi said.
“Eid-ul-Adha is a festival of sacrifice and not a carnival of extravagance. Let’s donate generously to the flood victims through government departments or charity organisations. Every Muslim should consider this as his or her responsibility,” he appealed.
