Mangaluru, Dec 28: Four students from the Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) have qualified the Regional Mathematics Olympiads (RMO). It is a matter of pride that out of the 41 students (30 students (Class 8-11 + 5 Girls quota + 6 class XII students) selected from Karnataka, four are CFAL students. The students now qualify to the next level, i.e. Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO) to be held on 19th January, 2020 and are also invited to attend the INMO training camp to be held at ISI, Bangalore from Jan. 15-18, 2020. In addition to this, 20 students are invited to attend the INMO training camp and CFAL student, Druhan Rajiv Shah is one among them.

About 1100 students from all over India are selected for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad which will take place on January 20, 2020 in various centres across India. The marks acquired in this stage will lead to selection of 30-35 students for a training camp. The camp will be a basis for the selection of 6 students who will represent the country in International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

The celebrity students from CFAL are Shreyas Adiga (Class X), Shreepoorna Rao (Class XI), Rakshitha (Class XI) and Praneetha Kalbhavi (Class X). It is noteworthy to mention that Druhan, Shreepoorna Rao and Rakshitha are TLC PU College students.

About IMO -

The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India, which leads to participation of Indian students in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

The first stage examination is the Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO), students who qualify PRMO advance to the second stage examination, The Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO). 60 students from CFAL had qualified the PRMO examination this year. The problems under each topic at the RMO level involve high level of difficulty and sophistication.

The best-performing students from the RMO qualify for the third stage – the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). The top students from the INMO (approximately 35) are invited for the fourth stage, the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) held at HBCSE during April to May. At this camp orientation is provided to students for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Emphasis is laid on developing conceptual foundations and problem-solving skills. Several selection tests are held during this camp. On the basis of performance in these tests six students are selected to represent India at the IMO. Resource persons from different institutions across the country are invited to the training camps. The selected team undergoes a rigorous training programme for about 8-10 days at HBCSE prior to its departure for the IMO. The Olympiad programme culminates with the participation of the students in the IMO.

CFAL – the best results in town!

CFAL at Mangalore has been creating and recreating history with its results in various STEM related exams. However, what stands out as an exceptional achievement for them is the fact that their students have done tremendously well at the Olympiads. Their student, Aditya Prakash from CFAL represented India at the International Math Olympiad, a first in Karnataka after 21 years. Besides, Prathyush Poduval had won a silver medal at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in IOAA 2018. It is also noteworthy to mention that the students who qualify for RMO every year are CFAL students. With the race for the 2020 Mathematic Olympiad already begun, we wish CFAL students beat their own record and reaffirm the fact that they are the best in town.

An Indian expatriate, hailing from Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, who was detained in Jeddah jail in an alleged cyber case, was set free recently. He is allowed to continue his work in the same company.

The 49-year-old Mangalurean, has been working for a Maintenance company in Jeddah for more than 13 years. He is known for his efficiency and sincerity in the company with good experience in his field of work.

His company usually assigned him on duty in Jeddah sea port to take the delivery of the goods consigned to his company. As a part of his duty, he normally takes pictures of the goods before the transportation. He did the same in February 2023 too.

The security personnel informed the police about his act that amounts to be a violation of the port security rule. He was unaware of the rule as he was doing it normally in the port during the release of the goods. Since then, he was detained by the police on the charge of photographing inside the port premises. After more than 6 months detention, he was released and allowed to work in the same company.

The detainee’s brother based in Jeddah was constantly pursuing the case.

P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono NRI lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, extended his socio-humanitarian help in this case upon the request of his family and relatives.

He actively involved trying to set him free from the jail on humanitarian grounds with the coordination and help of the Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah. The CGI keenly followed up the case with the concerned Saudi authorities. He was released from the jail recently and shared his happiness with his family and thanked good samaritans.

Mangaluru, Mar 28: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP has warned the individuals and political parties against the poll code violations during private events.

“Private events such as marriages, birthdays, housewarming ceremonies, and other non-political programmes do not require any permission. However, one should ensure that there is no violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) at these functions. Permission is needed if the events are attended by politicians or candidates,” the DC said.

He said that these gatherings will be under the surveillance of MCC teams, as there are chances of luring voters by campaigning and supplying food, said the DC. The district has 38,386 new voters, of which, 19,619 are men.

He said that the notification of election in Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency will be issued soon, and the filing of nominations will be held between 11 am and 3 pm till April 4.

Only five persons, including the candidate, will be allowed to enter the returning officer’s chamber to submit the nominations. A facilitation centre will be opened at the DC’s office.

The expenditure of the candidate will be counted from the day the candidate files the nomination.

The DC said that the district is not an expenditure-sensitive constituency. Assistant expenditure observers and expenditure observers will monitor the expenditure of the candidates. An expenditure book will be provided to the candidate to record expenditure incurred, he explained.

Further, he said that no election materials can be printed without the name and address of the publishers, and the number of copies printed. Separate permission should be availed for procession prior to the submission of nomination papers from the ARO office, through the single-window system.

Bengaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday launched simultaneous raids in multiple places, including Bengaluru and Shivamogga.

Reports suggested that the ongoing raids are in connection with the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1. The blast had injured at least ten people as per the police report.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) had launched an investigation alongside the NIA, and the trail of the suspect led them to Tumakuru first and subsequently to Ballari. Investigators believe that the bomb was planted by Mussavir Hussain Shazib, a handler of the Islamic State’s Shivamogga module who was aided by another IS handler called Ahmed Taahaa.

Sources in the know said that Shazib and Taahaa had stayed in Chennai for about a month between January and February using fake credentials. The names of the suspects were identified after they traced the cap worn by Shazib to a shop in a mall in Chennai. The cap, which was abandoned by the bomber in Bengaluru after the blast, was reportedly bought by Taahaa, around January-end.

As per the NIA, Shazib hails from Masjid Road in Thirthahalli, Shivamogga district, and Taahaa from Fish Market Road, Soppu Gude, Thirthahalli Rural. Both "wanted" suspects have been termed "absconders" by the NIA.

The NIA has questioned seven jailed terror suspects so far in connection with the blast. The investigation agency had also obtained seven-day custody of a jailed terror suspect named Maaz Muneer Ahmed.
