Mangaluru, Mar 23: Fishermen working out of Mangaluru Fishing Harbour can now breathe a sigh of relief from the overcrowded Mangaluru old port as Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports Pramod Madhwaraj on Thursday inaugurated a 102-metre-long jetty for idle berthing of fishing vessels at Sultan Battery.
Built at a cost of Rs 5 crore, the 100 m long jetty abutting the Phalguni (Gurupura) can accommodate about 35-40 mechanised fishing vessels or more than 60 country vessels. “This will reduce the pressure on the fishing harbour,” Madhwaraj said in his short inaugural speech.
The minister also laid the foundation stone for the construction of an indoor stadium in Urwa and an outdoor stadium in Yekkur.
The indoor stadium, to be built at a cost of Rs. 6.5 crore, is for holding badminton and kabaddi matches. An official from the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department said the stadium would reduce the burden on the indoor stadium located near Mangaluru City Corporation.
The outdoor stadium at Yekkur will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore. This stadium, on an area of 1.1 acres, will have a walking track and space for playing cricket, football and other outdoor games.
Madhwaraj said the department would give additional funds, if required, for the improvement of facilities at the stadium. J.R. Lobo, Mangaluru City South MLA, and Mayor Bhaskar Moily attended the three functions.
