Hosapete, Feb 19: A tense situation prevailed in Hosapete as procession taken out by Hindu Jagaran Vedike (HJV) to mark Chhatrapathi Shivaji Jayanti took a violent turn on Monday.
According to sources, a clash broke out when a few Muslim youths opposed HJV activists tying flag to a pole and raising provocative slogans.
Enraged by this, HJV workers began pelting stones at the nearby mosque and shattered its glass windows.
The violence later aggravated when the two groups clashed and a slug fest broke out.
Assistant Commissioner Gargi Jain rushed to the spot as the police quelled the mob and pleaded with the angry protesters to remain calm and call off their protest.
Meanwhile, the HJV workers blocked the highway and all vehicles bound for Shivamogga and Raichur have come to a halt. Traffic is piling up on the highway.
