Bengaluru, Dec 19: A young software engineer, who had gone to Carmelaram railway station, east Bengaluru, to see off his home-bound parents, was crushed to death after he jumped off the train when it started moving.

The victim’s father too sustained injuries as he jumped out on noticing his son was sucked under the train. He has been admitted to a private hospital.

The deceased has been identified as V Vikram, 28, son of Vijayan, a native of Palakkad in Kerala. He came to Bengaluru two years ago.

The train had pulled in at around 8.45 pm on Monday. While Vikram was helping with his parents’ luggage inside the compartment, the train suddenly started moving.

An anxious Vikram jumped from the moving train. He slipped and fell in the gap between the train and the platform. Within seconds, he was run over. His father who noticed it tried to rescue him, but, he too, fell onto the platform.

Body unattended for 3 hours

Family members said that for nearly three hours Vikram’s body was on the tracks, and the concerned railway officials did not show any interest in recovering the body.

Later, when the police arrived at the scene, they shifted Vikram’s body to the Bowring hospital.

After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the relatives. Since his father too was in the hospital, Vikram’s last rites were conducted in the city itself.

Shafeek, a family friend of Vikram, said that at small stations trains halt just for two minutes. “His parents were aged and they could not carry their luggage inside the train, so, he boarded the train, and within no time the train started moving. There should be an announcement in each station or signal before the train starts moving, like in the metro. There was even a bigger gap between the train and the platform, resulting in the mishap.”

He further added that Vikram’s body was left unattended for nearly 3 hours on the tracks. His mother, Vijaya Kumari, was inconsolable at the scene. The Baiyappanahalli railway police came very late to the spot, said Shafeek.

Mangaluru, Mar 28: A fish meal factory in the Baikampady Industrial area in Mangaluru was gutted in a fire incident on Thursday, officials said.

The factory is owned by the company 'Shihar Enterprises', they said.

According to the locals, the fire was first noticed at 4.45 am today, which was immediately reported to the fire department.

The fire engines reached the spot and tried to douse the fire, but it had already spread to other parts of the factory. After almost four hours of fire-fighting operation, the blaze was completely doused, officials.

The reason for the blaze is still being probed, the fire department officials said, adding that they suspect an electric short circuit could have triggered it.

Hassan: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda has announced that his son, former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will contest from state's Mandya parliamentary seat as NDA candidate.

Deve Gowda told reporters on Tuesday that the decision to field Kumaraswamy, who is also JD(S) state president, in Lok Sabha polls from the Mandya seat was taken amid mounting public demand. "People are demanding that Kumaraswamy should contest from Mandya. In the core committee meeting as well, all members suggested that he should contest from Mandya," Deve Gowda said.

The former Chief Minister's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy had lost to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh from Mandya in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The JD(S) supremo further said that the name of senior leader Mallesh Babu has been finalised from the Kolar seat.

Deve Gowda's grandson and former Karnataka Minister H. D. Revanna's son sitting JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna will be contesting as the NDA candidate from the Hassan seat.

Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy in a media briefing indicated that he would contest from Mandya amid mounting public pressure on him.

Congress has fielded Venkatarame Gowda popularly known as ‘Star Chandru’ from the Mandya seat dominated by Vokkaligas. Star Chandru is a close associate of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Bengaluru, Mar 22: An FIR has been registered against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya over a provocative hate post on social media, Election Commission officials said on Friday.

The move comes after a complaint filed by officials of the poll body and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that the Bengaluru South MP, who is also the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, had in a post apparently targeted a minority and spread enmity between two communities.

He also made a similar post on March 19 on X and YouTube which went viral. He has 1.3 million followers on X, thereby influencing the voters and disturbing the communal harmony between the communities, it further alleged.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Halasuru Gate police station on March 20 under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 295 A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act, the officials said.
