Trump signs executive order against Obamacare on Day One

Washington, Jan 21: Within hours of taking the oath, new US President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at "minimising the economic burden" of Obamacare "pending repeal", to make good on one of his most impassioned campaign promises of dismantling his predecessor's healthcare law.

The one-page executive order was Trump's first since becoming the 45th president of the US. The order says "It is the policy of my administration to seek the prompt repeal" of the law.

Moving into the Oval Office soon after his inaugural parade concluded, Trump signed the order on Affordable Care Act directing "the departments and agencies to ease the burden of Obamacare as we transition to repeal and replace," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters here.

The order was titled "Minimising the economic burden of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act pending repeal". The White House did not provide details about which aspects of the law Trump wanted to target through this order.

The order asks federal departments and agencies to take actions consistent with law to minimise the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the Act, and prepare to afford the states more flexibility and control to create a more free and open healthcare market.

Trump's move came a few hours after he drive to the White House from Capitol in a motorcade. With his signature on Day One, Trump has sent a powerful message that his priority would be dismantling the healthcare law that covers some 20 million Americans and was the signature healthcare program of his predecessor Barack Obama.

During his extremely gruelling election campaign, he had promised to take steps on his first day in office to repeal 'Obamacare', as the law is popularly known.

The Republican controlled Congress has already take steps to repeal the Affordable Care Act. They last week signed bills to complete the first step to repeal the law.

Republicans view Obamacare as a costly drift toward socialised, European-style medical care. The Trump Administration is in process of its fast replacement.

New Delhi: A 24-year-old student from India was shot dead inside a car in Canada's South Vancouver, the local police have said. The Vancouver Police in a statement said Chirag Antil, 24, was found dead inside a vehicle in the area after neighbours reported hearing gunshots.

"Officers were called to East 55th Avenue and Main Street around 11 pm on April 12 after residents heard the sound of gunshots. Chirag Antil, 24, was found deceased inside a vehicle in the area. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing," the police said.

Chirag Antil's brother Ronit told reporters that Chirag seemed happy when they spoke on the phone in morning. Chirag later took out his Audi to go somewhere. That was when he was shot dead.

The Congress students' wing National Students' Union of India chief Varun Choudhary in a post on X tagging the Ministry of External Affairs requested for assistance to the student's family.

"Urgent attention regarding the murder of Chirag Antil, an Indian student in Vancouver, Canada. We urge the Ministry of External Affairs to closely monitor the progress of the investigation and ensure that justice is swiftly served," Mr Choudhary said.

"Additionally, we request the ministry to extend all necessary support and assistance to the family of the deceased during this difficult time," he said.

Chirag Antil's family is raising money through the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to repatriate his body to India, local media reported.

Haryana resident Romit Antil, the brother of Chirag Antil, told CityNews that he was a kind-hearted person.

"My brother and I had a great relationship. We used to talk every day, day and night. I spoke to him last before the accident happened. He was kind of happy, he never had any issues or fights with anyone, ever. He was an extremely polite person," Romit Antil told CityNews.

Chirag Antil came to Vancouver in September 2022. He just finished MBA at University Canada West, and recently got his work permit.
