Mangaluru, Dec 25: Enthusiasm is soaring high among everyone to witness the upcoming annular solar eclipse on 26 December. Expert Pre University College, Valachil is gearing up to set a new record as all 2300 students with their teachers will be viewing this rare and spectacular celestial phenomenon from the college’s hilltop campus.

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun's center, leaving the Sun's visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon

The last annular solar eclipse visible from Mangalore was in 1748. The next annular solar eclipse visible from Mangalore will be in 2064.

Prof. Narendra L. Nayak, Chairman, Expert Group of Institutions, in a press release stated that it is for the first time that as many as 2300 students are going to watch the celestial event at a time in a single campus. He said that the students will be provided with safety eclipse goggles to view this rare phenomenon and it will help remove superstitions about eclipses from the minds of common people.
