The deceased have been identified as Holebasappa Shiraguppi (55), Yamanappa Hadapada (45), Ashok Sathappanavar (40) and Rudrappa Gurappanavar (55). Another person in the vehicle, Basavalingappa Shiraguppi survived the accident.

Sathappanvar was on his way to his wife's place (Yandigeri) along with his relative, Gurappanavar. He offered a drop to the other three, who were waiting for a bus in Anavala village. The car left the village by around 9 pm when it was raining heavily.

As the vehicle was crossing the stream near Anavala village, it was pushed around 100 metres away from the road by water gushing from the stream. The vehicle later got stuck between the pillars which were erected for building a bridge across the stream.

“As the car swerved, the door on my side opened. I came out, swam the stream and cried for help. People living nearby pulled me from the stream with the help of a rope,” said Basavalingappa Shiraguppi. The other four in the vehicle had died by then. The police conducted a search operation from 12 midnight to 3.30 am and traced the bodies. Kaladagi hobli received record rain on Tuesday night. It rained 272 mm in a single night, said tahsildar Vinay Kulkarni.
