Mangaluru, Jun 2: The people of Manglauru may have different views on outgoing city police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar. But, in spite of being criticized often by the communal outfits, the latter has no bad opinion about Mangalureans in general.

“99.9% of people in Mangaluru are peace lovers. They are known for communal harmony and amity. Only 0.1% people are trouble mongers and we can see such people in all communities,” said Mr Chandra Sekhar, who will be soon taking over as IGP of Criminal Investigation Department and Economic Offences in Bengaluru.

Admitting that working in the coastal city was a indeed challenge for him, the top cop recalled that he was initially told that Managluru is a communally sensitive area where people belonging to different communities often fight with each other. “However, now I have realized that the number of trouble mongers is very less. Majority of Mangalureans always stand for justice. I will miss them,” he said.

Asked about most challenging cases he faced during his 17-month stint in Mangaluru, Mr Chandra Sekhar recalled the coldblooded murder cases of RTI activist Vinayak Baliga and engineering graduate Karthik Raj and armed robbery at the house of the chief priest of Kateel Durgaparameshwari temple.

“It is said that some people had tried to give communal tinge to the murder case of Karthik Raj. In Vinayak Baliga murder case, the accused had tried their best to divert the attention of the police. On the other hand there was hardly any clue in the Kateel robbery case. We finally cracked them all,” he said adding that truth will prevail always.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
