Bangalore, May 28: Additional Director General of Police (KSRP), P Ravindranath, who has been accused by a freelance journalist of capturing her pictures on his cellphone at a coffee shop on Cunningham Road, on Tuesday alleged that it was a conspiracy by Bangalore Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar and other senior IPS officers to defame him.

The official said that he has resigned from the service following the allegations and requested Home Minister K J George to conduct an investigation into the episode as he has been targeted by a senior IPS officer. However, George said the question of Ravindranath resigning from service did not arise as there was neither a complaint nor a case against him. “I have directed DG&IGP L R Pachuau to submit a report,” he said.

Ravindranath, a 1990 batch IPS officer, told reporters: “Auradkar made false allegations that I had links with Naxals when he was DIG (Intelligence) and I was DIG (Economic Offences). The inquiry did not establish the allegation. He is now using a woman to target me.” When contacted, Auradkar refused to comment.

Top sources said the government had plans to replace Auradkar with Ravindranath as Bangalore police commissioner.

The woman in her complaint to High Grounds police on Monday stated that a man started capturing her pictures on his phone when she was inside the coffee shop with her friend.

The police registered cases under IPC Sections 354 (assault or criminal force against woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against an unidentified person ' as the complaint did not mention the accused 's name.

The police are likely to submit a report to the court soon mentioning Ravindranath 's name.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
