Kalburgi, Sep 25: A joint rally by different social and religious organisations asking the State government to initiate stern action against individuals and organisations that openly threaten rationalist writers and free thinkers was held in Kalaburagi on Thursday.

Organisations including the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane, Dalit organisations, Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Basava Dal, and other organisations swarmed the main road from Jagat Circle to Vikas Soudha complex to protest against the killing of rationalist writer M.M. Kalburgi.
The speakers at the rally wanted the State government to handle communal elements with an iron hand. They said that the soft handling of moral policing in Dakshina Kannada and other coastal districts had emboldened those elsewhere in the State.
They demanded that the government book the organisations which threatened to ransack the houses of senior writers Chennavir Kanavi and Giraddi Govindaraj as well as Sri Ram Sene leaders threatening to cut out the tongues of rationalist writers for their comments about the characters in Ramayana and Mahabharatha.
They demanded a Special Investigation Team to probe the murder of Dr. Kalburgi.
