Mangaluru, Jul 10: Monsoon has gained momentum after a brief lull in coastal Karnataka. Incessant rain from Thursday to Friday in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district has brought relief to the people who were disappointed in June. Udupi district too received good rainfall.

The monsoon had become weak since about a fortnight thereby enhancing anxiety among the farming community in the district whereas residents in urban areas were concerned over the possible dwindling of drinking water sources.
Putting their concerns at rest, the monsoon revived bringing in copious rain across the region. While it began raining heavily in Mangaluru since Thursday morning, the hinterland had been receiving heavy rain since Wednesday afternoon.
The met department has forecast heavy rain for the next two days, while stating that there will be moderate rainfall thereafter till July 15. The temperature too is expected to be pleasant with the maximum hovering between 26 degrees and 27 degrees Celsius.
The district has received 140 mm of rainfall as on July 9 this year as against 138 mm of rainfall in the same period of month of July last year. The average for the period is 1,217 mm which means that the district has received just 15% of the average rainfall for the month as of now.
The cumulative rainfall received by the district till July 9 from January was 1,130mm as against 939 mm received during the same period last year. The average is 2,393 mm, a shortfall of 50%.
Water levels in Nethravathi river at Bantwal, Uppinangady and Kumaradhara in Uppinangady were at 4m much below the danger level.
On Thursday till 8.30am, the district had received 65 mm of rainfall, with Belthangady recording a high of 90mm. Puttur recorded 80.5mm, Bantwal 66.2mm, Sullia 52.4mm and Mangalore 34.2mm.
In Moodushedde two people, including a child, were injured when a wall collapsed . The injured are Arun Kumar and Lokesh Poojari. Both are undergoing treatment and are said to be in a serious condition.
Meanehile, water level in Kumaradhara near the temple town Kukke Subrahmanya was just two ft below Kumaradhara Bridge level in the morning. On June 26, the submersible bridge had underwater this monsoon.
