According to Air India, the scheme is a part of its ongoing airport upgrade offer 'Get Up Front' where passengers flying in economy class can avail upgrade to executive class at the airport on payment of a fixed minimum amount ranging from Rs.5,000-Rs.7,000, depending on distance being travelled.
The scheme will be subject to availability of seats in the executive class. The scheme can be availed on payment of fix amount of Rs. 5,000 for a distance up to 750 km and Rs. 7,000 for a distance above 750 km.
If a passenger books an economy Delhi-Mumbai ticket well in advance paying about Rs. 5,000, he or she can upgrade to Executive Class by paying another Rs. 7,000, taking the total fare to Rs. 12,000, which turns out to be much cheaper than an original Executive Class ticket worth over Rs. 25,000.
Filled-up business class seats are a key revenue earner for an airline's business.
"The offer is open to all passengers holding revenue tickets in economy class, including APEX (advance purchase airfares that provide discounted prices, but with restrictions) fares. The scheme is valid till Oct 31, 2014," the airline said.
A similar upgrade scheme is already available on Air India's international sectors till June 31, the rates for which depend on the sector and the distance of travel.
In some domestic sectors where the airline operates a full-economy aircraft, Air India would reserve the first three rows and offer premium service to the upgraded passengers.
The national carrier also offers an advance purchase fare scheme in various slabs on the 237 holiday packages to 125 domestic tourist and religious destinations to attract leisure and holiday travellers.
The airline like many others is offering various schemes to lure more passengers this summer holiday season.
Flash sales and discounted offers seem to have become a norm for airlines to keep up the market share and fill aircraft seats to show for higher load factors.
