Moodbidri, Jun 15: Hundreds of people, mostly students from within the State as well as outside, took part in Pragathi-2014, the fifth of the annual job fair organised by Alva 's Education Foundation in Moodbidri.

The job fair witnessed nearly 16,000 students trying their best to get placement, including 4,739 spot registrations, 10,712 online registrations and 1,467 walk-ins from ITI.

Over 216 companies from 11 sectors like IT, hospitality, manufacturing, automobile, healthcare, BFSI, media, sales and retail, NGO and education, BPO/KPO and HR agencies participated on the first day.

Popular firms like Titan, Oracle, E & Y, IBM, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Idea Cellular, Biocon, UAE Exchange, NMC, Aditya Birla Group, Reliance Communication, Infosys, ITC, Vodafone, L & T, Taj Group, ICICI Bank, Wipro, TVS participated in the job fair, looking for eligible candidates whom they can hire.

Speaking at the inaugurating of the two-day job fair on Saturday, Labour Commissioner S B Shripad highlighted the need for the education institutions to impart information about the job availability for particular qualification. In today 's society, it is not important to just provide education to students, but also the educational institutions should guide the students in getting the jobs.

It is unfortunate that even post graduates tend to do small jobs. Students should try to get the job that suits their qualification and through job fairs students should be guided. If there is an opening for one job, thousands of youth apply for the post. This indicates the competitiveness in job market.

Inaugurating the programme, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO?Tulasi Maddineni said that the role of society was larger in the youth getting quality education. Knowledge is valued when a person gets a suitable job for the education he has obtained, she said.

Alva 's Education Foundation Founder Dr M Mohan Alva said that Alva 's Pragathi has been organised from five years for the benefit for rural youth.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
