Mangalore, Jul 9: After demitting their office on Wednesday, the chairperson and members of the Child Welfare Committee, Dakshina Kannada announced that they had laid down their office following the end of their term to make way for the appointment of a new committee.

Briefing mediapersons at a press conference here on Wednesday, advocate Asha Nayak, after stepping down as the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, said that the committee had handled a total of 1,138 cases dealing with children, out of which 1,121 cases have been settled. With 17 cases pending before the committee, the rate of pendency is very less. A total sum of Rs 7.15 lakhs has been given as sponsorship for education to 125 child beneficiaries through the Integrated Child Protection Society, she said.

Speaking of cases of sexual abuse, she said that over 50 cases of sexual abuse had been handled by the CWC under the Protection of Children under Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) which involved rehabilitation, counseling, protection and care of the children.

During the tenure of three years and nine months, 37 children have been adopted through certain government-recognised adoption agencies in the district, she said.

Relating few incidents that had cropped up during her term, she said that more awareness regarding child rights was necessary so that crimes against children could be avoided or brought to the fore.

The CWC had also had collaboration with Yenepoya Medical College at Deralakatte for providing the required health care for rescued children perennially. The collaboration with a medical institution was the first of its kind, she said.

Juvenile Justice Bill, 2014

Replying to a query on the proposed Juvenile Justice Bill, 2014, Mrs Nayak said that the Bill was an innovative legal Act, with several changes in the nomenclature and terminology related to crimes by and against minors. However, the policy that the chairperson should be a government-appointed official or a bureaucrat is not feasible, since the chairperson had to be present during all CWC proceedings. It will not serve the cause, she said.

She added that advocate Nikesh Shetty had been appointed as the new chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee.

Former CWC members Lavanya Shetty, Dr Suphala Kotian and Manjula Rao were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
