Around 3,700 II pre-university (PU) students across Karnataka, who fell short of mandatory attendance for various reasons, will not be allowed to sit for the final exam, scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 1 in the state.
This year as many as 6.9 lakh students including 3,37,860 girls and 3,52,292 boys, who have met the 75% attendance requirement, have been issued hall-tickets to appear for the II PU exams.
Last year (2017), as many as 4,204 II PU students who were unable to write their examination owing to attendance shortage. In 2016 and 2015 as many as 4,720 and 2,050 II PU students had fall short of attendance.
Hence, in the beginning of this academic year, Director of Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) had asked all colleges to warn students in at least in the month of November. Officials in the DPUE said that college managements had issued several notices to the students in the middle and towards the end of the academic year.
It is learnt that a majority of the students who fell short of attendance are from private colleges which normally will have a messaging system where parents receive an SMS if a student misses a single lecture.
College managements said that despite repeated attendance shortage lists being announced and students issued warnings, many failed to comply with the attendance requirement.
