Udupi, 11: More than two weeks after he was posted as the Superintendent of Police of Udupi district, IPS officer K T Balakrishna took charge here on Thursday. He replaces K Annamalai, who was transferred as Chikkamagaluru SP.
Speaking to presspersons after taking charge here, Mr. Balakrishna said that he would give importance to pro-people policing in the district.
Besides controlling organised crimes such as betting and matka, he would also give importance to checking traditional crimes, Mr. Balakrishna said. Maintenance of law and order would receive priority, he added.
With regards to naxalite activities in the Western Ghats regions of the district, the SP said that he would do an in-depth study of the problem. He would meet the chief of the Anti-Naxalite Force and hold talks with him. “We will do everything possible to keep the naxalite activities in check,” he said.
To a query, he said that any instance of immoral policing would be dealt sternly according to the law.
Mr. Balakrishna said that he would provide effective policing with the existing staff. “Shortage of staff is no excuse to providing effective work. We will do our best with whatever we have,” he said.
On the charge of police losing credibility in the handling of the murder of businessman, Bhaskar Shetty, he said that such charges were unfounded.
“We will put in our sincere efforts and take action as per law in the case,” he said.
Mr. Balakrishna, who began his career in the Police Department in 1997, has held several posts, including the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police of Channapatna and Mandya districts, and as Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada and Gadag districts.
