Bantwal, Jan 9: In a curiosity-evoking incident, few unknown people dug open an old anthill-cum-Naga Bana in Kavalapaduru village in Bantwal taluk following rumours of the existence of ancient treasure beneath it.
The discovery of the incident at the anthill at Bengatthodi in Kavalapaduru village has caused shock and surprise among the local villagers.
With the existing anthill in the grove of trees in the area, the locals formed a committee to set up a Naga-katte for the dedicated worship of the anthill which was considered as the sacred abode of the revered snake. For this purpose, it was scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Naga-katte at the spot on Wednesday. The anthill was considered to be old, with a historic significance.
However, much to everyone's surprise, the anthill had been dug open before Wednesday, owing to rumours of existence of ancient treasure inside the naturally-made structure.
It is suspected that the culprits who dug open the anthill used the same pickaxe and tools which were kept to lay the foundation stone for the Nagakatte. While the locals have no clue to the identity of the culprits who committed the act, it is also not known whether or not the culprits found any treasure from the anthill.
Based on the information provided by local gram panchayat member Shankar Shetty, Bantwal rural police arrived at the spot and conducted inspection. Taluk panchayat member Padmashekhar Jain and others also visited the spot.
However, as scheduled, the local committee laid the foundation stone for a new Naga-katte.
