BARC Director inaugurates St Aloysius College Advanced Research Centre

Mangalore Jun 1: Sekar Basu Director, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai inaugurated 'St Aloysius College Advanced Research Centre' here on Saturday in the college Teletorium.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Basu  said that  research projects should increase in colleges and there must be collaboration with BARC for research.

“Any endeavour involves risk and so does Nuclear projects. Nuclear energy is the least risky project. Nuclear energy is the origin of all energies. The second revolution must come from nuclear energy,” he said.

On the occasion research scholar Ms. Pallavi B. presented the chief guest with radiation flowers, “The plant is 'Zinnia elegans var dreamland', We select the seeds of these plants and irradiate them using gama rays at BARC in Mumbai. The seeds are then re introduced into the fields and kept under observation to check variation. We have obtained yellow, white, orange and peach along with different variations of pink,” said Ms Pallavi  who is a research scholar at the laboratory at St Aloysius College.

A novel experiment has also been conducted by boys at St Aloysius Boys Home under the guidance of scientists at BARC. Dr. Stan D'Souza. The  scientist and the boys have successfully grown the BARC released variety of groundnut, which is the first to be grown in this part of the country.

Rector of St Aloyius Institutions Rev. Fr Denzil Lobo ,  Rev. Fr. Swebert D'Silva SJ, Principal, Dr. Stan D'Souza, Scientist , BARC Dr. A M Narahari, Registrar St Aloysius College, Dr. Richard Gonsalves, Director ,St Aloysius college Advanced   Research Centre were  present on the dais.

Research is not new to St. Aloysius College. In 1984, DST has recognized and documented the Laboratory of applied biology, under the directorship of Rev .Fr, Leo D'Souza ,making it the first tissue culture laboratories of region. St Aloysius continues to give utmost importance to research and quality education.
