
Mangalore, May 2: “The struggle of Basavanna against several issues that plagued the society such as casteism and untouchability are relevant even today. Even in the present age, we are trying to rid the society from existing social plagues,” said Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.
He was speaking at a programme commemorating the birth anniversary of Saint Basaveshwara jointly organised by DK district administration, Department of Kannada and Culture and Karavali Veerashaiva Kshemabhivruddhi Sangha, Mangalore at Town Hall here on Friday.
In his presidential address, Mr Ibrahim said that several personalities have taken birth in the country from time to time and contributed greatly to the society. “We should contemplate on the extent of the success of the teachings of these personalities in the present age. However, in today's world, there is more consideration on how to be different from the rest, than removing inequality among people, he said, adding that people, nowadays, were too busy to look back and follow the ways of Basaveshwara in their daily life.
It is saddening that no one has much knowledge on these poets who brought in reformed the society through their teachings, he said.
On the occasion, Banavasi Somashekhar delivered a lecture on the principles and teachings of Saint Basaveshwara.
Swami Girisiddeshwara Shivacharya of Basavanagudi, and Rudramuni Mahaswami of Gurupura Jangama Mutt, Mangalore inaugurated and blessed the programme.
Founder-president of Akkamahadevi Veershaiva Mahila Sangha, Dakshina Kannada Suma Arun Manvi and lecturer at Dr M V Shetty College, Mangalore Dr Katyayini were present on the occasion.
The formal programme was followed by a cultural programme on the life of Saint Basaveshwara.
