BIT launches Bearys Shiksha-Suraksha Foundation

Mangalore, Sep 4: Bearys Institute of Technology (BIT) launched Bearys Shiksha – Suraksha Foundation' (BSSF) on September 3 at its campus in Mangalore.

Andrew J Lock, President of Herman Miller International, Kartik Shethia, Sales Director SAARC regions, Herman Miller, and Chairman of Bearys Group Syed Mohamed Beary inaugurated the scheme which is the first of its kind in an Engineering college in this region.

Campus Director, Dr M Sainath, during his briefing about the scheme said –“The vision of this scheme is to facilitate good Education for the children of the low-income employees of Bearys Institute of Technology. Parents of these children would not need to worry about where the money for the fees of the children is going to come from because the BSSF foundation would provide support for the same.”

Elaborating further on how the scheme works, he said that the funds would come from voluntary contributions every month from all the employees of the college. At the end of the year, the management would then give a matching contribution to the total amount collected through the year. These funds would then be distributed to the employees who apply for support by virtue of a point's scheme awarded to each application under various heads.”

Launching the scheme at BIT, the Principal Dr. K. Palakshappa handed over an envelope to the Chairman Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary, containing the first contribution to the fund by himself, the Campus Director and the Heads of the Departments. The Chairman then immediately deposited Rs.1, 00,000 to the fund as a matching grant from the management and wished the scheme the very best. Student volunteers and faculty coordinators of the scheme received the contribution from him.

Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary then addressed the gathering. In his talk, he said “Every success story has sacrifice incorporated with it. Only when you recognize the sacrifices of successful people will a better society be created. Sharing of knowledge and helping the needy people will only help you grow morally and ethically in life.”

The guest of honor Mr. Andrew J Lock congratulated the students and staff of BIT for taking up this initiative and said, “It's an enormous gift to help people and be a part of their life.“ In his talk delivered to a packed audience listening in rapt attention, he stressed upon realizing the purpose of life and committing oneself for that. Drawing extensively from his vast experience, he said that it was the warm greeting of an employee at Herman Miller when he went there for the first time that prompted him to join the organization. Its values and commitment to quality made him stick on with it for over two decades.

Mr. Karthik Shethia then gave his talk in which he said that an understanding leader is always the best tonic for the team members to function smoothly and enthusiastically. He presented a video to the audience in which he highlighted how Herman Miller actively participates in the upkeep and nurturing of nature – a green' concept very much close to one of the founding principles of BIT.

Earlier, Dr. Palakshappa, Principal of BIT, welcomed the gathering. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sheikh Mohideen K.M, Head of Information Science Engineering Department and the rendering of the national anthem.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Udupi, Dec 2: A wave of regional pride is sweeping through Udupi district as Shagun S Verma Hegde, a talented Class 9 student from Christ King English Medium High School, Karkala, has been named the captain of the Indian National Team for the Under-15 Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Shagun holds the unique distinction of being the sole player from Karnataka selected to represent the country in the prestigious international tournament. The championship, organized by the School Games Federation, is scheduled to take place in Shangluo, China, from December 3 to 13, where Shagun will lead the national squad.

A Remarkable Journey to the Top

Shagun’s selection is a testament to her dedication and exceptional skill on the court. Her journey included several rigorous rounds of selection:

•    She was the only player from Udupi district to qualify for the state-level selection camp.

•    Out of eight players from Karnataka who advanced to the national selection camp in Pune, Maharashtra, Shagun was the only one to secure a place in the final national squad.

•    The national camp saw participation from approximately 200 players, which was shortlisted to 23. Shagun not only made the final cut but was also ranked as the second-best player overall, solidifying her leadership role.

Shagun, who is the daughter of Sandesh Verma and Shruthiraj of Kallotte, Karkala, has trained under experienced coaches Santosh D’Souza, Jeevan D’Silva, Jairaj Poojary, and Ramesh. Her selection as the team captain has brought profound honour to her family, school, the Udupi district, and the entire state of Karnataka.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
