Madikeri, Nov 27: Jathyatheetha Okkoota’s honorary president and High Court advocate A?K?Subbaiah on Thursday held BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal, which had called for a district bandh on November 10, are responsible for the death of district VHP?unit’s organising secretary Devapanda Kuttappa.

Addressing a press conference in the town, Subbaiah said the State government had decided to observe Tipu Jayanti on November 10. There were many ways to oppose the celebration of the Tipu Jayanti. But the BJP legislators gave a call for the bandh voluntarily. This led to tension and resulted in the death of three people, including Kuttappa, he charged.

“In a complaint to police, Kuttappa’s son has said that Kuttappa, who had come to Madikeri for the third day programme in connection with the marriage of a relative, had been killed. Then, why was Kuttappa moving around the District Hospital and G?T?Circle near Town Hall where the Tipu Jayanti programme was organised? I don’t know whether there will be a special programme on the third day of a mariage? As I know, there will not be any such programmes,” he said.

Subbaiah said a number of Muslims had come to take part in the programme on that day. Stones were thrown at them near the District Hospital. The Muslims threw back the stones to protect themselves. Kuttappa, who was present there, ran to save himself and died. Only an investigation would bring out the truth whether he died due to stone throwing or he fell into a pit and died, Subbaiah added.

He said Kuttappa, who was aged, should not have gone to the place where there was chaos about observing Tipu Jayanti. He himself invited death. He needlessly lost his life by creating trouble to observe Tipu Jayanti. The BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal, which had called for the bandh on that day, are responsible for all this, he charged.

PIL in High Court
Subbaiah said Kerala High Court has upheld a judgement that organisations will be responsible for loss of life and loss during bandhs. The Supreme Court has also upheld this verdict. A public interest litigation (PIL) will be filed in the High Court holding the Kodagu district BJP unit responsible for the violence, he said.

CBI?probe demanded
He said the government should hand over the probe of Kuttappa and Shahul Hameed death cases to CBI. A retired or current High Court judge should conduct a probe into the violence that occurred in Madikeri, Somwarpet, Napoklu and other places in the district, he demanded.

Compensation issue
Subbaiah said, “The government has provided a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of Kuttappa, who had opposed the celebration of Tipu Jayanti and Shahul Hameed, who was supporting the event. But the government has not provided compensation to the family of Raju who died after falling from the hospital building in that charged atmosphere.”?

Jathyatheetha Okkoota president and advocate K?R?Vidyadhar was present on the occasion.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
