Co-operative leader R N Nayak shot dead in Ankola

Ankola, Dec 21: In a shocking incident, unknown miscreants gunned down a co-operative sector leader at Ankola in Uttara Kannada district on Saturday afternoon.

R?N?Nayak, 57, was getting into his car near the head office of his Dwaraka Credit Co-operative Society Limited on K?C?Road when he was shot.

The bullet fired by one of the attackers broke through the glass pane of the right side rear window of the car and hit Nayak on the right side of his rib cage.

A seriously injured Nayak died on the way to hospital. One of the miscreants died when Ramesh Gowda, Nayak's gunman, fired in retaliation, after giving him chase.

Another accused was caught and thrashed by the public. He was later handed over to the police. Three others fled, leaving their Maruti Omni vehicle.

It is said that Nayak was engaged in real estate business in recent times and the land mafia is suspected to be behind the attack.

Nayak is survived by his wife, Lata, son, Mayur, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
