Mangaluru/Udupi, May 11: Coming from a rural background did not hold back Radhika Pai, a student of Sarswati Vidyalaya PU College, Gangolli, Kundapura in Udupi district, who also topped the science stream.

“There is no need for sophisticated colleges for one to succeed. It all depends on how you pursue your goals,” Radhika said.

Without any extra coaching, she scored 100 marks each in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology and 98 each in English and Sanskrit. Radhika, the only child of businessman Madhav Pai and Maya Pai, wanted to be an engineer since her childhood.

Srujana N, from Expert PU College, Mangaluru, was pleasantly surprised on Thursday evening when she learnt that she had topped the Science stream, along with another student with 596 marks out of 600.

She is the daughter of P Niranjan Kumar, a businessman, and Dr Nalini N , a professor at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in Bengaluru.

“I was so surprised to know that I came first! Even my parents were not expecting it. At last my hard work has paid off,” she said.

Srujana scored a perfect 100 in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Computer Science, 99 in Hindi and 97 in English. She has not decided the course of her future yet, confused between engineering and pure science degree.

“My mother is a lecturer so I will take her guidance to decide what to choose. But whatever I pick, I want to study in the top college for that subject,” Srujana said.

“Mangaluru is a great place for studies and we shared a competitive spirit in class. I have been alert in class as well as interact a lot with friends,” she said.

Niranjan, her father, said, “It is entirely because of her effort that she was able to achieve this. She has scored a hundred marks in core subjects and 97 in English and 99 in Hindi. She has been good at her work throughout. As she was staying in hostel, initially, I would travel down to Mangaluru once in 15 days or a week. She had done extremely well in SSLC too,” he said. Srujana hopes to become an engineer.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
