Mangalore, Aug 25: When a delegation of activists from like-minded organisations went to submit a memorandum to the Commissioner of Mangalore City Police on Saturday urging stern action on the miscreants who celebrated' the demise of literary figure Dr U R Ananthamurthy, Commissioner R Hithendra is said to have behaved in an unruly manner.
Briefing mediapersons in this regard, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla said that when the delegation of activists went to submit a memorandum at the police commissioner's office on Saturday evening, they did not find any senior officers present. “The receptionist too declined to accept the memorandum. When the commissioner was contacted through a phone call, he told us to hand over the memorandum and leave. When he was informed about the absence of any senior officers in the premises, he told us to leave the memorandum on the table in his chamber. When there was an objection to this, he told us to toss it on the table and do as we pleased,” he said.
He said that upon such a statement, the activists sat on a dharna in front of the commissioner's office demanding that he accept their memorandum.
It is said that ACP Pawan Nejjur, Subramaniam and others arrived at the scene and began to pacify the demonstrators and also agreed to accept the memorandum.
“Now, Pandeshwar ASI Shareef has been transferred to the police control room for dereliction of duty. It is condemning that the commissioner is trying to hide his mistake,” said Mr Katipalla.
Before visiting the commissioner's office, the activists had staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Saturday, condemning the celebrations of pro-Hindutva activists due to the death of the noted Kannada writer Ananthamurthy.
The delegation included senior litterateur Sara Aboobacker, Vasanth Achari and Yadav Shetty from CPI(M), Muneer Katipalla, SFI leader Nithin Kuthar, Dalit representatives Shashidhar Hejamady, M Devadas, Krishnanada and others.
Accusation false, justifies Commissioner
Reacting to this, Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that since Saturday was a holiday for government offices owing to the state mourning for Ananthamurthy's death, the police officers were not present in the office.
He claimed that since the delegation did not wish to hand over the memorandum to the police personnel present, they were making a false accusation.
He also said that no action was taken against any police officer in this regard.
