Mangaluru, Mar 6: Even though a majority of BJP leaders in Karnataka have supported Yettinahole river diversion project, the Dakshina Kannada unit of the saffron party has decided to continue agitation against it.

Speaking at a function to felicitate newly elected BJP members of the zilla and taluk panchayats in the city on Saturday DK MP Nail Kumar Kateel said that that the Congress government of Karnataka is draining Rs 13,000 crore from the exchequer through this project.

In fact the controversial project was approved by the then-BJP government of Karnataka when DV Sadanada Gowda, who also hails from Dakshina Kannada, was chief minister of the State.

Mr Kateel said that the project would not ensure 24 tmcft of water to parched areas of Kolar, Chickballapur, Tumakuru and Bengaluru. Despite knowing this fact, the State government was going ahead with the project to lift rain water from Yettinahole, a stream joining the Netravathi near Sakleshpur.

He said that people from the parched regions were also realising that the project would not meet their need of water. He said that the modalities of the fight would be decided based on the decision of the Southern Zone of the Green Tribunal, which is hearing a petition questioning execution of the project.

Earlier, BJP district unit president Pratap Simha Nayak congratulated party workers who were elected to the taluk and zilla panchayats.

Central Government wanted this project must go ahead, DV Sadananda Gowda batting for this project. Whereas Mangalore MP Nalin is against this project. He was MP one term before, when Sadananda Gowda, then chief minister batting for this project, never raised any objections. If Nalin has real interest in stopping this project, he must talk to Modi for swift action.

Is it not a double standard?

As well congress is also saying it is also not in favor of it....then who is in favor of it...if it is not favorable for anyone then cancel it....no need to prolong with this issue....like in Kashmir nobody wants to solve that problem too...

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
