Mangalore, Mar 5: IPS officer Dr Sharanappa S D officially took over as the new Superintendent of Police for Dakshina Kannada Rural on Wednesday.
He took charge from outgoing SP Shantanu Sinha, who served in the district for a period of five months.
An IPS officer of 2009 batch, Mr Sharanappa hails from Aland taluk in Gulbarga district. He has previously served as the Superintendent of Police in Gadag district, after a stretch as additional SP in Sagar subdivision of Shimoga district.
Interacting with mediapersons after taking charge at his office in the city, he said that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which were announced to be held on April 17, would take the foremost precedence of the police department in the district since the model code of conduct was in place. The department will make security arrangements to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections in the district, he said.
“There is a lot of difference between the Gulbarga and Dakshina Kannada. The problem of Naxalites is prominent in Dakshina Kannada, which is also a communally-sensitive district. Under my charge, the police department will strive to achieve communal harmony in the district. Higher importance will also be given to community policing and community participation of the police officers in the handling of affairs,” he said, adding that the basic police functioning in the district should be good.
“Our focus will be on improving the quality of professional police functioning in the district. Along with the arrangements for elections, we will focus on different areas of policing and try to bridge the gap between the police personnel and public,” he said.
To a query, he said that he would not bow down to any pressure, political or otherwise.
Mr Sharanappa has obtained his MSc degree from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and his PhD from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.
