Mangalore, Jul 21: Several protestors undertook a sit-in protest at the Mangalore Railway Junction here on Monday demanding speedy completion of the railway under-bridge at Padil and basic facilities for railway passengers at Mangalore Junction railway station.

The protestors also undertook a protest march from the railway crossing at Padil to the Mangalore Junction railway station shouting slogans against the railway department for the inordinate delay.

Addressing the protestors, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla said that several residents living in areas such as Bajal, Padil, Faisalnagar, Veeranagar, Jalligudde, Pakkaladka and Alape commute daily through the same route and the closed gates at the railway crossing are a major inconvenience to the commuters. The closed gates create blockades making the people unable to cross over. Hence, an under-bridge at the crossing is must requirement for the ease and convenience of the nearby residents, he said, adding that the delay in construction of the under-bridge was causing hindrance to the people.

Although the people have been demanding for an under-bridge for a decade, the solution for their problems has not yet been set up by the railway department and the city corporation. Moreover, the railway department had been delaying the work, stipulating an additional sum of Rs 21 lakhs for the completion of the under-bridge, he said.

Mr Katipalla also said that the railway department had completely neglected the development and upgradation of Mangalore Junction railway station. The cleanliness of the railway station is in a state of abandon. Basic facilities such as toilets, platforms and ATM facilities are non-existent in the railway station, he said, urging the department to provide basic facilities at the railway station.

DYFI members B K Imtiyaz, Santhosh Kumar Bajal, Suresh Bajal, Jayanti Shetty, Ashok Salian, Naveen and others were present.
