
Gopal Naik, Inspector of Manipal Police Station, said on Tuesday that Vaibhav Singh (19), a third semester student of Automobile Engineering at MIT, was sitting on the parapet of the balcony of his apartment, which is on the sixth floorand was talking on his cellphone at around 6.20 p.m. on Monday.
The mobile slipped from his hand. When he reached out to catch it, he fell. His roommates rushed him to the Kasturba Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors, Mr. Naik said.
Vaibhav hailed from Vadodara in Gujarat. A case of unnatural death has been registered. His funeral was held at the Beedinagudde Crematorium in Udupi, in the presence of his parents, who had arrived from Gujarat on Tuesday, said Srikant Rao, Joint Director of MIT.
