Kollam, Jul 18 In what can be called a height of superstition, a self-styled “Muslim” exorcist tortured a young woman to death in Karunagappally in Kerala's Kollam district while trying to exorcise the jinn (spirit) that he said had got into her body.

jinn

The incident took place last weekend and the exorcist, Sirajuddin, a native of Adikkattukulangara in Alappuzha district, has been absconding since then.

According to the police, Haseena (26), daughter of Hassan Kunju of Thazhava near Karunagappally, had died of a massive vertebral injury she had suffered on the night of last Saturday when exorcist kicked her amidst his bid to cast away the evil spirit that he said had got into her.

The woman's father, Hassan Kunju, 58, and an aide of the exorcist, Kabir, 58, of Thodiyoor were taken into police custody here on Wednesday in connection with the incident.

Haseena, who had been suffering from speech impairment and showing symptoms of mental disorder, had collapsed due to the torture. Sensing danger, the exorcist, left the place immediately after convincing the woman's relatives that the jinn would have left her by the time she regained consciousness. He has been absconding since then.

However, the relatives took the woman to a private hospital nearby after she failed to regain consciousness but she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital early Sunday morning.

The police came to know about the incident after somebody informed the City Police Commissioner, Kollam as the relatives were trying to bury her body claiming that she had died of natural causes.

Autopsy done at the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram proved that Haseena had suffered a massive blow in the vertebral column and a massive bleeding had taken place into her abdominal cavity. It was later revealed that Sirajuddin had kicked her with all his force by holding her with a firm grip on her hair.

Haseena's father Hassan Kunju and other relatives have admitted to the police that she was subjected to the exorcist's treatment as she was showing symptoms of mental disturbance which Sirajuddin said was due to the presence of the jinn inside her body. They also told the police that the “treatment” had been going on for two weeks.

Police officials said that they had intensified the search for Sirajuddin and that he would be caught soon. Haseena's father Hassankunju and Kabeer Moulvi, the middleman who had brought Sirajuddin to the house describing him as the exorcist, have already been arrested.

The victim's neighbours said that they had been hearing cries and shouting continuously from her house for several days. A local resident also said that the relatives had not cared to give any kind of medical treatment to Haseena though she had been showing symptoms of mental disturbances for quite a long time.

Banned practice

Even though Islam strictly prohibited exorcism, there is a large number of exorcists among Muslim community in India especially in Kerala. A drive some years back to control the activities of exorcists and self-styled godmen' had brought to light several discomforting incidents.

Muslim scholar O Abdullah said that there should be stringent legal provisions to ensure that such brutal customs in the name of spirituality did not recur in the Kerala society. “This is nothing but exploitation of ignorance and superstition among the people and such practices have no religious approval,” he said.

Maulana Abdul Kareem, a local cleric said that exorcism is one of the major sins in Islam. However, many ignorant Muslims still continued to approach exorcists, which is a cause of concern. He said that government should take immediate action to curb exorcists across Kerala.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
