Mangaluru, Jun 10: A minor girl committed suicide at her residence in Kumpala Krishnanagar near Ullal on the outskirts of the city, allegedly after being harassed by a policeman, who reportedly blackmailed her after befriending her.
In her death note, Jyoti, the 17-year-old foster daughter of Jayanti, a retired teacher, has held Praveen Salian, a policeman from Pandeshwar Police Station in Mangaluru, responsible for her suicide. It is said that Salian was a part of the district armed reserve force.

Police sources said that the frustrated girl hanged herself at her home on Wednesday morning, when her mother had gone to attend Yoga training classes held by Kesari Mitra Vrinda in Kumpala.
After finishing Yoga, Jayanti returned home and knocked on the door of Jyoti’s room, which was bolted from inside, for a long time, but got no response. Worried, she called up her neighbours and broke open the door only to witness the dead body of her daughter hanging from the ceiling fan.
Jyoti had completed PUC at Parijnana College in Someshwar and got admitted to B.Com at Besant College, Mangaluru. Classes are yet to begin.
Jyoti has left behind a one-and-a-half page note in Kannada explaining the consequences that led her to take the extreme step.
The girl said in the death note that Praveen Salian, who was working at Pandeshwar police station became her friend through Facebook and they exchanged phone numbers too.
Gradually their friendship turned into love affair and they met each other. However, after sometimes Salian started controlling her and warned her against being in touch with her friends and relatives.
The girl also stated that Salian had also demanded Rs 1 lakh in cash and gold ornaments and started blackmailing her. She stated that unable to tolerate the continued harassment from Salian she decided to end her life.
Assistant commissioner of police, Kalyani Shetty, sub-inspector, Bharati visited the spot. A case has been registered at Ullal Police Station. As soon as the news of suicide began to spread people gathered in large numbers and demanded immediate action against the accused.
