Mangalore, Oct 21: Around 180 Air India Express passengers from Mangalore and Kerala who had stranded at Saudi Arabia's Dammam International Airport, following abrupt cancellation of an aircraft on Saturday, finally reached their destinations on Tuesday morning.

Dozens of Mangalorean passengers on board the plane, who were supposed to land at Mangalore International Airport at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, reached their destination at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Angry passengers have complained of having a harrowing time at the Dammam Airport without proper facilities as the India's national carrier had failed to inform the passengers as of when the flight would take off.

œWe can understand that the cancellation of flight was unavoidable as the safety of passengers is very important. But it is the duty of airlines to inform the passengers in advance and treat them with dignity, said Abdul Razzak, one of the Mangalorean passengers.

Another passenger said that after the abrupt cancellation of the flight due to a major technical glitch, the passengers were left in lurch as there was no one to listen to their woes for hours.

œWe had to starve without food and water at the Airport. Finally officials took us to Golden Tulip hotel at 1.30 a.m. on Sunday and we spent next 24 hours in the same hotel. On Monday at 1.30 a.m. they took us to Airport and again made us to wait until 6 a.m., when an official came to us and told the flight was again rescheduled to night. Once again we had to return to the hotel, he said.

œMy daughter-in-law and her two small kids were among the stranded passengers in Dammam. They had to face severe difficulties thanks to carelessness of airline authorities, said B A Mohammad Ali, a Mangalorean. œThey were twice taken to the Airport from the hotel and left unattended for a long time, he added.

Sameera (name changed), another Mangaloren passenger, said that she and her two small kids a two-and-a-half-year-old boy and an eleven-month-old baby had to undergo inexplicable difficulties for two days. œMy kids were starving and there was no food and water for them in my small vanity bag. I never imagined such a situation, she lamented.

Airlines Warned

Iqbal Kana, our correspondent in Dammam, said that annoyed by the indifference of Air India Express officials, the authorities at Dammam International Airport issued a warning on Monday and asked them to solve the problems of passengers immediately.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister said that Air India Express was warned for troubling its Dammam-Mangalore passengers. œThere are several complaints against the Air India Express from its regular passengers these years. But the airlines failed to learn the lesson, he lamented.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
