A fiery trade union leader
Mr. Gurunath, hailing from a poor family, was first the trade union leader in ACC Cement factory at Wadi in Kalaburagi district, and he joined the Communist Party of India. After being denied party ticket by the CPI, he contested the Assembly elections from Shahbad first as an Independent and in the successive election as Janata Party candidate in the late 1980s, but was unsuccessful.
He was elected to the State Assembly from Shahbad reserved constituency on Janata Dal ticket in 1994, and was inducted into the H.D. Deve Gowda Cabinet as Labour Minister.
His stint as a fiery trade union leader is still remembered by workers in the cement factories in Wadi and Shahbad. During one of the protest rallies in 1982, he suffered three bullet injuries when the police opened fire at the crowd. Mr. Gurunath was taken to Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai for the surgical removal of the bullets.
Mr. Gurunath later joined the KJP and contested from Shahbad unsuccessfully in 2013.
Mr. Gurunath is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. The former Union Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge, and the former Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, expressed their shock over the death.
