Girl takes U-turn, says neither swami raped her; nor she chopped his genitals

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 16: A rape case involving a bobbitised godman took a curious turn on Thursday after a letter—purportedly written by his victim—was submitted to a trial court.

bobbitised

Giving a clean chit to the rape accused, the letter said a man close to the 23-year-old woman instigated her to harm Swami Gangesananda Theerthapadar alias Hari Swami, aged 54.

A Malayalam television channel claimed it cross-checked with the woman and confirmed that she had written the letter.

Hari Swami's lawyer Sashthamangalam Ajithkumar produced the letter, written in English, before the court along with the accused's bail application. The lawyer claimed that he received the letter by post.

The letter accused three former aides of the Swami—Ayyappadas, Manoj Murali and Ajithkumar—of conspiring and instigating the woman to harm the godman, now in judicial custody.

Ayyappadas, who maintained a close relationship with the city-based woman, reportedly convinced her that the Swami was siphoning off her family's hard-earned money.

The letter also mentioned that police wrote the statement saying the Swami had tried to rape her and she chopped off his genital. It also reportedly said she signed the statement without understanding its content.

Investigators, meanwhile, remained unperturbed by the development. They were viewing the letter as a ploy to weaken the case, which grabbed national and international media attention.

"The defence often tries to influence the victim in rape cases, and make her turn hostile during the trial," an investigator said while dismissing the development. He, however, suspected a deeper conspiracy was involved in the case.

Probe supervisor and inspector-general of police (Thiruvananthapuram range) Manoj Abraham said the police were focusing on collecting as many evidence as possible.

Investigators were waiting for the result of the chemical analysis tests done on the clothes the woman was wearing at the time of the May 18 incident and her call details.

"The letter says that she merely attempted to chop Swami's genital but failed as he woke up and screamed. But our officers, who examined the crime scene in her house, could not find any evidence suggesting external interference," Abraham said.

The officer hinted that if the woman stood by the contents of the letter, the residents of the house—her parents and brother—would be the prime suspects in bobbitisation case.

Legal experts, meanwhile, opined that even scientific evidence proving rape would not be of importance if the victim turned hostile.

The woman had already given a sworn statement before a magistrate which was in contradiction to the reported contents of the letter.

The court would hear the bail plea on Monday.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
