May 12, 2017

Bengaluru, May 12: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday said that police department will have zero vacancy by 2018-19.

Speaking to reporters here after holding a review meeting with senior police officials, including DG&IGP R K Dutta and ADGP (Recruitment) Raghavendra H Auradkar, the minister said that since 2013-14 till date, the department has recruited 1,304 police sub-inspectors and 22,457 constables.

“This information was furnished to the Supreme Court and the court appreciated the efforts made by the state government in the police recruitment. To speed up the recruitment process, we have taken clearance from the Finance Department to add 16,000 policemen in the next three years,” he said.

Parameshwara explained that the total strength of the police force in the state in 2013 was 75,389, excluding IPS officers, and the number of vacancies stood at 19,000.

“As in January 2017, the staff strength has been increased to 1.56 lakh and the vacancies stand at 24,399. However, if the number of recruitments in the past three years are added, the actual number of vacancies would be 17,000. Besides, the other reason for vacancies was that no recruitment took place in 2010 and 2011 as far as PSIs are concerned and, in 2013 the recruitment process was delayed because of confusion over 371 (J) clause,'' he said.

A senior official said that one of the problems with the recruitment is a large number of policemen retiring every year. Around 2,500-3,000 policemen retire every year and the department has to keep tabs on this. “We have set out a target of recruiting 8,000 policemen every year to meet the tally of retiring staff and the vacancies for various reasons. Moreover, the state has eight permanent training schools and 22 temporary schools. At a time, a maximum of 7,000 policemen can attend the training,'' the official said.
