Mangaluru: Jan 20: Beginning Wednesday traffic police across Karantaka will crack the whip against pillion riders who do not wear helmets.

But, are children out of the purview of the rule, given that helmets for toddlers and headgear for children are hard to come by?
While Transport Department officials have maintained that there is no exemption whatsoever, the Bengaluru city traffic police have hinted at making an exception for children below the age of 12.
This comes even as a 12-year-old boy, riding pillion with his father, lost his life when the two-wheeler was knocked down by a truck on Tuesday morning in Bengaluru.
The police decided to enforce the rule from January 20 after conducting campaigns for about two weeks to create awareness about the Supreme Court order and the importance of both the rider and the pillion wearing helmets.
The State government introduced the rule after the Supreme Court Committee of Road Safety directed six states, including Karnataka, in August last year to make helmets mandatory for pillion riders. Helmet for pillion riders is mandatory in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Kerala.
