Hyderabad riots: Police claim situation calm, defends firing order on Muslim protestors

Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma visited the riot hit Kishanbagh area where Sikh and Muslim community clashed in the morning resulted in subsequent police firing which has confirmed three deaths of Muslims till now, toll is expected to rise further.

Incident occurred at Sikh Chowni in Kishanbhag area of Bahadurpura where a religious flag of Sikhisim was blazed last night by some miscreants.

In the wee hours of morning Sikh youths armed with swords started assembling at the spot even as deployed police officers remained mum.

The armed Sikhs attacked Muslim houses in Sikh Chowni and set ablaze properties. Muslims from neighbouring areas started to assemble after news of attacks started to spread which led to stone pelting between both communities.

Many houses and vehicles of Muslims were burned down by rioters.

Rapid Action Force and Border Security Force officers which were stationed for election security was immediately called in. Paramilitary forces first fired tear gas shells and then opened indiscriminate firing over Muslim stone-pelters killing one on the spot seriously giving lethal injuries to 20 others; another two youths later succumbed to injuries in different hospitals.

Mr. Sharma speaking with reporters said police is trying utmost to ensure that morning riots doesn't have any further repercussions in other parts of the city. Commissioner of Police told press reporters, “We have alerted all staff and patrolling is being intensified. Police have also imposed Section 144 to prevent gathering of mobs.” He claimed situation is under control and down played the whole incident as a clash between two groups.

In new development Cyberabad commissioner of Police C. V. Anand after imposing sec 144 took another precautionary step and imposed curfew in Rajendranagar police station limits.

Meanwhile, Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police Y. Gangadhar defended police firing claiming firing was necessary to control the situation but he claimed that orders were given to fire in the air. He told reporters, “Around 6.30 am, a group assembled and attacked people. As both groups, armed with swords clashed, we ordered BSF to fire in the air. Those who were at some height from the ground level were hit. Three people have died in the firing. The injured are stable, firing in the air was necessary to bring the situation under control.”

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs. 

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Udupi, Dec 2: A wave of regional pride is sweeping through Udupi district as Shagun S Verma Hegde, a talented Class 9 student from Christ King English Medium High School, Karkala, has been named the captain of the Indian National Team for the Under-15 Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Shagun holds the unique distinction of being the sole player from Karnataka selected to represent the country in the prestigious international tournament. The championship, organized by the School Games Federation, is scheduled to take place in Shangluo, China, from December 3 to 13, where Shagun will lead the national squad.

A Remarkable Journey to the Top

Shagun’s selection is a testament to her dedication and exceptional skill on the court. Her journey included several rigorous rounds of selection:

•    She was the only player from Udupi district to qualify for the state-level selection camp.

•    Out of eight players from Karnataka who advanced to the national selection camp in Pune, Maharashtra, Shagun was the only one to secure a place in the final national squad.

•    The national camp saw participation from approximately 200 players, which was shortlisted to 23. Shagun not only made the final cut but was also ranked as the second-best player overall, solidifying her leadership role.

Shagun, who is the daughter of Sandesh Verma and Shruthiraj of Kallotte, Karkala, has trained under experienced coaches Santosh D’Souza, Jeevan D’Silva, Jairaj Poojary, and Ramesh. Her selection as the team captain has brought profound honour to her family, school, the Udupi district, and the entire state of Karnataka.
