Mangaluru, May 9: Expressing a deep distrust towards the local police for not arresting the alleged “mastermind” behind the murder of Karopadi Gram Panchayat vice president Abdul Jaleel, his aggrieved father Haji A Usman on Tuesday urged the State Government to hand over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Tears rolled down elderly Usman’s wrinkled cheeks when he said that the mastermind behind the April 20 murder was still wandering freely and attending religious and social gatherings in the region without any fear, as the police are satisfied with the arrest of 11 ‘pawns’.

The police had confirmed the confluence of two angles in the murder case as the victim’s political rivals who had links with the underworld and the local anti-social elements had joined hands to eliminate Abdul Jaleel, whom they had considered a thorn in their way.

Rajesh Nayak, a habitual offender, was waiting to take revenge against Jaleel just because the latter had helped the police to catch him, while Dinesh Shetty was waiting to teach Jaleel a lesson, as the former had lost GP vice president post to the latter. Dinesh Shetty is said to be the cousin brother of the notorious underworld gangster, Vikky Shetty. While police have arrested Rajesh Naik and 10 others, Dinesh Shetty is still at large.

Addressing media persons at the press club in the city, Usman said that even though Home Minister G Parameshwar and District-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai have directed the police not to spare any suspects in the case, the Superintendent of Police has not taken any step to catch Dinesh Shetty, who according to Usman is the one who orchestrated the murder.

“The SP claims that Shetty is absconding in Kerala. But the fact is that he is wandering freely in Bantwal taluk. He had taken part in a function at Mitthanadka on May 5. He was also spotted yesterday by villagers. When he passes by check posts, the police smile and greet him,” said a helpless Usman, who was accompanied by the colleagues of his murdered son in Karopadi GP.

Usman said that he had approached IGP (Western range) P Harishekaran twice and handed him sufficient proof of Dinesh Shetty’s involvement in the case, but in vain. “Now, I suspect that the police are defending Shetty. I have lost faith in the district police”, he said.

The police have also revealed that the murder was bound by a supari of Rs 5 lakhs, of which Rs. 40,000 has already been paid. “Though the cops are aware of the person behind the transaction, they are not trying to catch him”, he groused.

Usman said that he has decided to personally call on the chief minister in Bengaluru next week and urge him to handover the case to CID and give justice to his murdered son.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
