Journalist B M Basheer bags ‘Muslim Sahitya Prashasti-2015’

Mangaluru, Apr 11: Senior journalist and Kannada writer B M Basheer has been chosen for the ‘Muslim Sahitya Prashasti-2015’. His anthology of poems ‘Amma Hacchida Ole’ has fetched him the award.

The annual literary award instituted by city based Muslim Lekhakara Sangha (MLS) for Muslim writers will be conferred on Mr Basheer on May 19, 2017 at Town Hall in Mangaluru.

The award also comprises of a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a citation. The programme will commence at 7:20 p.m. said a media release issued by Umar U H, president of MLS.

Mr Basheer, who is currently serving as the news editor of Vartha Bharati Kannada daily, is known for sensitivity in his writings. Hailing from Uppinnangady in Dakshina Kannada district, Mr Basheer is a member of prestigious Matha family.

Having over two decades of experience in Kannada journalism, Mr Basheer has earned thousands of Kannadiga fans from across the world through his editorials, short stories and poems.

He has already bagged ‘Muddana Kaavya Prashasti’, ‘Lankesh Prashasti’, ‘Chaduranga Pratishthana Prashasti’ and ‘Bannaje Ramacharya Ptrikodyama Prashasti’ for his various works.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
