
Mangalore, Aug 19: Well-known Kannada writer, translator and journalist P Noor Muhammad breathed his last on Tuesday night after a fatal motorbike accident at his hometown Uppinangady, on the outskirts of the city.
The tragedy took place on National Highway-75, when the 72-year-old Islamic activist was returning home on his Honda Activa after offering Isha prayers at Masjidul Huda.
A speeding lorry rammed into Noor Muhammad's two-wheeler when he was about to reach his home. However, the lorry driver sped away without stopping the vehicle, leaving the veteran writer in the pool of blood.
Noor Mohammad is considered as one of the pioneers of Islamic literature in Kannada. He has left behind a large corpus of Islamic works in Kannada language.
He has translated dozens of Islamic works from Malayalam and English into Kannada. He also has translated first two volumes of Tafheemul Qur'an into Kannada.
He was the editor-in-chief of Sanmarga Weekly, one of the first Islamic periodicals in Kannada. He was also a member of Jamaath-e-Islami Hind.
He is survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters and a large number of relatives, friends and fans.
