Kasaragod, May 7: A Muslim youth in Kasaragod district has foiled the attempt of unknown miscreants to trap innocent Keralites in the terror net through WhatsApp.

Haris Masthan did not delay in lodging a complaint with local police after he was added to a pro-IS WhatsApp group by an unknown admin.

“I grew suspicious when someone added me to a WhatsApp group called ‘Message to Kerala’. The unknown admin of the group informed me that I was one of more than 200 people from across Kerala added in the group. When I asked the motive of the group, the admin shared a pro-IS message,” stated Haris Masthan in his complaint.

The local police soon shared this information with the National Investigation Agency, which is already probing the case of a few missing Kerala youths who are suspected to have joined IS.

Based on Masthan’s complaint, the NIA reportedly interrogated some people who were members of the group. According to unconfirmed sources, the WhatsApp group was started by a Keralite using a mobile number he had taken from Afghanistan.

“We have examined a few witnesses at Kasargod and extracted messages as part of the investigation into the IS case being probed by our team," an NIA officer said.

It is suspected that the group may have been created to radicalise more people and invite them to join the IS.

IS or Islamic State is an international terror network which has carried out several terror attacks in various countries. Global Muslim scholars believe that ‘Islamic State’ is funded by anti-Islamic forces to defame Islam and Muslims.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
