
Kochi, Oct 13: A one-year-old child died at the LuLu International Shopping Mall located at Edappally in Kochi after she slipped off her mother's hands and fell on the escalator while the family was coming down from the second floor.
The incident happened in the afternoon and the child, identified as Zoya Fathima, suffered a head injury. . The child slipped from the hands of her mother from the second floor of the shopping mall.
Though she was rushed to the Amritha Hospital nearby, she succumbed to her internal injuries two hours later.
œThe family from Malappuram, after shopping on the second floor, stepped on the escalator to come down, with the baby in her mother's arms. Just as the mother stepped on to the escalator, the child slipped from her hands and fell on the escalator, said Vijaya Sankar, sub inspector, Kalamassery.
Zoya was rushed to the hospital but she could not be saved.
œDespite out best efforts we couldn't save her as she had suffered serious head injuries, said a hospital spokesperson.
Zoya was the youngest of four children of Mustafa, 39, and Fathima, 32.
The family was planning to visit the mall for some time and left their house early in the morning in Malappuram for Ernakulam.
The police said that no case would be booked since eyewitness' statements confirmed it to be an accident.
The body was handed over to relatives in the evening after completing the inquest proceedings.
LuLu Mall, opened a year ago, is managed by the EMKE Group, owned by Yusuffali M.A.
