Kumaraswamy says SIT harassing him, seeks protection from SC

New Delhi, Jul 8: Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Friday contended before the Supreme Court that he was being made to suffer fresh investigations after the apex court’s approval to proceed against him in a case relating to de-reservation of mineral-rich forest land in Ballari in favour of Janthakal Enterprises.

“This court had given permission to investigate the case of Janthakal Enterprises. In that case, they (the Special Investigation Team) are not proceeding at all. In respect of many other cases, they are registering fresh FIRs,” senior advocate Shekhar Naphade, representing the JD(S) leader, submitted before a bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan.

The apex court had in March this year directed the Lokayukta SIT to conduct “thorough” probe into the alleged role of two former chief ministers N Dharam Singh and Kumaraswamy and others in de-reservation of 11,797 sqkm of forest, leading to large-scale illegal iron ore mining.

However, another former chief minister S M Krishna had got relief as the Supreme Court had then said that the investigation against him “shall remain stayed” as directed on January 27, 2012 and reiterated it later.

On Friday, Kumaraswamy’s counsel pointed out that since the apex court had earlier directed that no other court should interfere into the matter, he did not have any option but to seek protection here.

Advocate Joseph Aristotle, appearing for the Karnataka government, submitted that the apex court has so far not issued notice to the 2014 special leave petition filed by Kumaraswamy against the High Court of Karnataka order declining to quash the criminal proceedings against him in the case relating to de-reservation of forest land.

On this, the Supreme Court sought the state government’s response within two weeks to Kumaraswamy’s petition.

The court then put the petitions filed by former chief minister S M Krishna, former IAS officers D S Ashwath, Shankaralingaiah and K Srinivasa for consideration on July 27. The court also took into record a status report filed by the SIT, in a sealed cover, in respect of investigation conducted so far in the matter.

In a complaint, activist T J Abraham had relied upon a report prepared by the then Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde, indicting the then chief ministers and bureaucrats in de-reservation of 11,797 sqkm of forest land in 2002-03 in Ballari district, resulting in huge losses to the state government.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
